The contribution of the tobacco industry sector in the Greek economy during the period 1900 – 1950 was important. Within the limited framework of this paper, we examined the course followed by the sector during this period and how it was influenced by the various historical events and their economic repercussions.
In the first chapter we included information related to the origin of tobacco, the varieties that were cultivated in the period 1900 – 1950 in Greece, the production process of tobacco and finally the people who were involved in the tobacco industry. In the second chapter we deal with the interaction of historical events and the tobacco industry sector. We examine the ways in which the various historical developments affected the production and the export of tobacco, how the industry contributed to the confrontation of critical social and economic problems, such as the 1.500.000 refuges from the Asia Minor Catastrophe and finally how it was disrupted due to the 2nd World War.
In the third chapter we report and evaluate the tobacco industry policies that were followed during this period.
